GroundWorks DanceTheater to Premiere Two New Works
at the Allen Theatre October 25 & 26
Fall Performance Series Presented by CSU Department of Theatre and Dance
CLEVELAND (September 20, 2013) – GroundWorks DanceTheater will kick off its fall performance series at the Allen Theatre in PlayhouseSquare with the world premiere of new works by Israeli guest choreographer Noa Zuk and GroundWorks Artistic Director David Shimotakahara at 8:00 p.m. on October 25 and 26. The program will also include Kate Weare’s 2013 commissioned work Inamorata.
The performances are presented by the Cleveland State University Department of Theatre and Dance, which continues its partnership with GroundWorks as a Professional Dance Company In Residence.

Noa Zuk and her creative partner Ohad Fishof spent four weeks in residence with GroundWorks in June and July of this year collaborating with the company on an exciting new work, After Chorus. The piece features Zuk’s choreography set to original music and sound by Fishof.
A performer with the Batsheva Dance Company (BDC) in Israel from 2000 to 2009, Zuk began creating her own work while there. She is also a teacher of Ohad Naharin’s Gaga movement language, which provides a framework for discovering and strengthening your body and adding flexibility, stamina and agility while heightening the senses and imagination. Fishof, who also teaches Naharin’s Gaga movement language, is an artist and musician working in sound, dance, video, performance and installation. A longtime contributor to BDC, he began his artistic career as a musician with the pioneering Israeli art-pop band Nosei Hamigbaat. Fishof teaches at Hamidrasha Art College and the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Tel Aviv.
Emergent, Shimotakahara’s newest work, was inspired by theories about how complex systems evolve and behave, and how our understanding of these systems correlate with similarities in patterns of human behavior and how we interact with and affect each other. A work for four dancers, the piece is set to an evocative mix of recorded music, combining acoustic instruments, voice and computer processing.
Shimotakahara created Emergent in honor of Jack Katzenmeyer, GroundWorks Board Chair since 2004, with enormous gratitude for his invaluable service and contribution to the evolution and development of the company.
Set to an array of musical selections, from a Bach cello suite to tango, folk and other styles, Kate Weare’s Inamorata features dancers in duets, trios and ensembles that challenge their physicality and expressive range. When it premiered last February in Cleveland, The Plain Dealer praised the choreographer’s “gift for juxtaposing the playful and the ardent, the mechanical and the elegant.”
Weare, who founded her New York-based company in 2005, has collaborated with a variety of talents, including violinist David Ryther, Brooklyn-based indie band One Ring Zero, and composer Michel Galante and the Argento Chamber Ensemble, among others. For more information, visit www.kateweare.com.

Now in its 15th season, GroundWorks is dedicated to the development and presentation of new choreography and collaborations. The five-member company performs new works by Shimotakahara and Artistic Associate Amy Miller, as well as commissioned work by nationally and internationally acclaimed choreographers including Ronen Koresh, Dianne McIntyre, Lynne Taylor-Corbett, Jill Sigman, Gina Gibney, David Parker and others.
