Project Description
Two Nights in Allen Theatre
By Mark Horning, AXS
In partnership with the Cleveland State University, GroundWorks Dance Theater will be presenting its 4th annual fall concert series. The performance will be held at the Allen Theater at Playhouse Square on Oct. 16 and 17, 2015. Time for both performances will be 8 p.m.
This series will feature two world premieres. The first is a new work by guest artist and choreographer Kate Weare titled “Far and Near.” This is Weare’s second commissioned work for GroundWorks. Her first production was titled “Inamorata” and premiered in Cleveland at the Breen Center for the Performing Arts in 2013.
David Shimotakahara’s newest work is titled “Shadowbox” and is a performance that was inspired by “Violins of Hope.” The work features newly composed music by Israeli composer Oded Zehavi and is presented in partnership with the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, The Jewish Federation of Cleveland, and The Cleveland Institute of Music.
“Violins of Hope” is a new exhibit at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage. The exhibition showcases nineteen violins that were played at various death camps during World War II that have been found and carefully restored to concert quality by famed violin maker Amnon Weinstein over the course of the past two decades. The violins will be on exhibit at the Museum until January 3, 2015. During that time numerous programs, workshops, film screenings, dance performances, plays, concerts and lectures will be held around the area of Northeast Ohio. As with all things connected with “Violins of Hope,” the work “Shadowbox” is highly emotionally charged.
The third performance on the GroundWork’s program is choreographed by Lynne Taylor-Corbett (who has been nominated for a Tony Award). The piece is titled “Unpublished Dialogues” and is based on the life of Virginia Woolf.
Tickets for the reserved seating for each performance range from $20 to $25. Children under the age of 18 and student tickets are $10 (use Promo Code 1STU).
