Jake Nahor has been dancing since he was young. ” [He] was always the kid who left school right away to go to dance”.
The New York native is excited to be dancing with GroundWorks this season. Jake is an alumnus of Alvin Ailey & Fordham University, London Contemporary Dance School, and Walnut Hill School for the Arts.
What are you most excited for during your GroundWorks debut season?
I’m excited to work with so many different choreographers. I love jumping from project to project and seeing the different worlds that each choreographer creates. I feel so lucky to travel to different places through the processes that unfold.
What makes you unique as an artist? What do you want to contribute to GroundWorks?
I think what makes me unique as an artist is my interest in thinking in opposite forms. If I was creating a performance, how would I see this in a film and edit this for film. If I was making a film, how would I dance this for a live show? I’m still researching this idea, but I’ve found that it makes my choices more 3D and helps me to consider a sense of theater in the everyday.
Tell us about your dance background. How did you find dance?
My mom put me in dance when I was young and I never left. I was always that kid who left school right away to go to dance or couldn’t go to things on the weekend because I was dancing. Then when I was in highschool, I decided to go to boarding school for dance and just kept going.
New York has a very large dance scene. How did being surrounded by that growing up shape your artistic experience?
Growing up and going to school in NY was the best. I’m really inspired by seeing and going to things, so going to the ballet, theater, museums, and concerts felt like things I had to do to live and be happy.
Welcome to Cleveland! What are some of your initial impressions of the city?
The city seems quiet at the moment. I miss the quick pace of city life and hope things return when it gets a little warmer out.
