After finishing his creative residency with GroundWorks, we talked with Antonio Brown and discussed how his creative process has shifted from creating a stage work with GroundWorks to a dance film. His new dance film, INSIDE, will premiere at out Drive-In Dance Film Screenings October 29-November 1. Learn more and reserve your spot here.
GW: What were some of your inspirations and starting points for creating the film?
AB: Some inspirations I had beginning this film creation were the images and loose concepts of a tv show I was watching on Netflix. I was also inspired by the location we were rehearsing in, it opened up many possibilities.
GW: How different is the process of creating a dance film from creating a stage work?
AB: The biggest difference for me creating a dance film and a stage work is the editing process and how I put things together. For a stage work I try and make sure transitions of sections for the dancers happen as organic as possible during creation. For this film I didn’t think about any of that until after everything was made and filmed. I then went through everything with my videographer and put each section in order.
GW: What were some surprises or challenges that occurred during the creation and filming process?
AB: Besides creating during a pandemic and taking all measures to keep everyone safe, the biggest challenge I faced was not putting everything together until after the filming. Everything from music to order of events happened post filming which was new for me.
GW: How is working with GroundWorks similar or different to other commissions you have done in the past?
AB: Working with GroundWorks was a true pleasure, everyone was open and willing to dive into new things and face the challenges of COVID to make this work happen. The collective positive energy among us is common in my processes and that was only enhanced with this company from my hometown.
