In a GroundWorks DanceTheater exCHANGE with John Carroll University, students were invited to attend the GroundWorks Allen Theatre performance and use the experience as inspiration for poetry. Below are video excerpts of the performance that inspired John Carroll University student, Joe.

Reaction

Internal Flame

Arms extending slowly
Legs thrown out for balance
Then quickly retracting
The appendages burnt
By an unseen flame

The reaction too slow
Sparks catch, pace increasing
The flames enveloping
Movements become wild,

Unpredictable
Cadence fueled by panic
Rhythm flailing falters
Technique forgotten
Thrashing about as if
There is a desperate,
Crazy hope that sweat
And lack of oxygen
Will extinguish the blaze
